ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic struck West Point as this volume moved into production. West Point met the immediate need of resuming instruction via emergency remote teaching by ensuring that cadets and faculty alike had the necessary tools to meet minimum standards of instruction. The Brigade Tactical Department assessed and identified the material needs of cadets and met them through extraordinary measures such as mailing laptops to cadet home bases. A daily Academic Officer in Charge visited the study conditions of the handful of cadets who had remained at or returned to West Point during this period. Faculty used a Remote Teaching Discussion Forum where they could ask questions of each other in an informal setting and share emerging ideas and techniques for remote teaching. West Point is planning for an uncertain future as people bring in our next class of cadets and adapt our summer training and education for the current classes.
