ABSTRACT

Resources were wasted and both coalition and Iraqi citizen lives were lost to the chaos that ensued as security and nation-building efforts failed to bring about the desired stability. It was a very tough period for the nation of Iraq and the coalition personnel working to secure the peace. This philosophy of design has led this course, infrastructure engineering, to have an impact well beyond West Point. Water is the most essential element of human existence and is strongly tied to economic vitality, justice, the environment, and a host of other critical outcomes required to support creation and continuation of democratic, peaceful, and stable societies. Energy production and use, especially electrical energy, raises some of the great existential questions facing mankind. Roads and rail lines cut across the landscape in endless lines while bridges soar across rivers and gorges in symphonies of concrete and steel, compelling people to consider their role in daily life.
