ABSTRACT

COVID-19 poses a great challenge to global public health, one of its tragedies being the disproportionate number of deaths among older adults. Age is an important factor of poor prognosis of COVID-19. The pandemic has further exposed the lack of experience and resources for nursing homes (NHs) to respond to Public Health Emergencies. Qinggang nursing home, China’s first nursing home approved by the national development and reform commission, was set up by a first-class tertiary hospital, as the vanguard and pilot base of a nursing care institution in China, becoming famous throughout the country for its integration of medical care and nursing. Compared with other nursing clinical practices, the NH sector received less attention and was slower to respond to this pandemic, with the most painful consequences. As the global population ages and the life expectancy grows, increased growth in the demand for aged-care services of nursing homes is predicted.
