ABSTRACT

This chapter interview data was collected with trans young people and their parents, and situated alongside survey data collected with parents of trans young people. The chapter explores how both parents and young people account for fertility preservation, including in terms of experiences with fertility professionals, views about future reproduction, and accounts of what it means to inhabit a reproductive body. Specific attention is paid to how accounts of fertility preservation are often normatively gendered, and how this impacts upon transgender young people’s experiences with fertility clinics. Finally, the chapter explores how transgender young people negotiate with their parents with regard to fertility preservation, including when parent and child views on fertility preservation may be in conflict.
