ABSTRACT
This chapter problematizes the recontextualization of Simone de Beauvoir’s Le Deuxième Sexe in the Turkish cultural environment through its translation, first published in the 1970s, with a special focus on the author’s and reader’s positions in both the original and translated texts. The study aims to make generalized predictions about possible readings of the Turkish translation of Le Deuxième Sexe in the Turkish cultural field, with an emphasis on the author–reader relationship. This study starts from the premise that the translation process inevitably involves some kind of domestication of the foreign text. As a result, texts that are produced in a particular culture and historical circumstances are re-read and reinterpreted in different cultures and historical circumstances.
