ABSTRACT

A minority of teacher-preparation institutions, mainly in areas with a relatively large minority ethnic population have well-developed antiracist and multicultural content in their programmes and their tutors meet regularly at conferences organized by the National Association for Multicultural Education, the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education and the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE). When minority-ethnic qualified teachers find employment as teachers they join a small minority nationally with highest proportions in inner-city secondary schools. A survey of teacher employment, which also compared the career experience of ethnic-minority against white teachers, was begun by the CRE in 1983 and published in 1988. Organizations like the Anti-Racist Teacher Education Network (ARTEN) provide the frame for joint action and, along with journals, particularly Multicultural Teaching and Forum, disseminate information, research and reflection on the educational problems and social-policy goals of antiracism and multiculturalism.
