ABSTRACT

In this chapter students will continue to explore social determinants of health in order to gain a better understanding of disability and its incidence, prevalence and impact on disadvantaged populations. Students will explore models of disability and what it means to be disabled in Australia. The importance and reality of intersectional identities will be explored through students’ engagement with online activities and class/tutorial tasks. These will assist students in understanding how multiple layers of identity and/or disadvantage can change health outcomes significantly and influence the incidence and/or management of disability. This will be accompanied by a review of current national policies and services (NDIS) aimed at supporting people living with a disability and their carers. Using case examples and research, students will investigate and develop an understanding of the ways healthcare professionals can work with people with disability.
