ABSTRACT

In response to the frequent short and vague comments received from students in the end-of-semester module questionnaire in an international university in China, the project implemented constructive feedback coaching for students to shape their habits of using complete sentences and specific language, and to enrich their vocabulary and understanding of teaching evaluation. With the large volume of qualitative data gathered from student responses, MATLAB Text Analytics Toolbox was selected to automate the process of extracting texts from portable document format reports and performing text analytics commands including pre-processing, ngram, and Latent Dirichlet Allocation. Findings from the analysis of more than 10,000 words of comments provided clear themes and directions for further module development. While the coaching can be beneficial to all modules, MATLAB was strongly recommended to coordinators of large modules and educational developers to design evidence-based learning and teaching enhancement projects.
