ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a comprehensive review of collective bargaining in the University of California system with a particular focus on graduate students, postdocs, and lecturers. The article explores the dynamics of framing proposals and conducting negotiations in one of the most complex and largest public systems in the country. Issues such as the delicate matter of untangling student interests from employee definitions are discussed, as well as how matters of social justice and equity can be incorporated into the collective bargaining environment. The author concludes with good practical advice for those who are interested in best practices and ongoing professional conduct of negotiations in academic environments.
