ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on academic collective bargaining at University of Florida and Oakland University. Located in Rochester, Michigan, Oakland was one of the first public universities with collective bargaining. Oakland is one of 15 public universities in the state, but mid-sized, with the University of Michigan the flagship. University of Florida is large and the flagship is University of Florida. While there are significant differences between the two institutions, bargaining is essentially the same. The focus on bargaining is collaboration. That includes improving the university through bargaining, rather than bargaining as an impediment.
