ABSTRACT

In this chapter we provide an overview of Interest-Based Bargaining (IBB) from the perspectives of the labor negotiator, management negotiator and neutral party based upon our experiences using this approach during two rounds of contract negotiations following a near strike at Portland State University. We advance a framework that conceptualizes IBB as more than just a method of bargaining. When the precepts of IBB are applied consistently and deliberately during the three phases of bargaining: 1) preparation for bargaining, 2) contract negotiation, and 3) post-bargaining engagement, labor and management can foster an interest-based (IB) orientation that has the potential to build a more collaborative and productive organizational culture.
