ABSTRACT

Providing the social and scholarly contexts for the book, this introductory chapter assesses the overall scenario of the Nepali media environment during the 21st century, including sociopolitical perspectives, technological transformation, and professional challenges. Since 1990, Nepali journalism experienced unprecedented growth in the number of media outlets across the country, having nurtured a media environment of diverse content production, broadening the scope of coverage, technology use, and professional development, including ethical and legal measures. Connecting global perspectives on various media issues of Nepal, this chapter presents an overview of Nepali media development from three different perspectives: sociopolitical, technological, and professional. In this chapter, we argue that despite the quantitative growth of news media outlets, technological advancement, and diversity of media content and coverage over the last three decades, Nepal's news media environment is in a chaotic situation because all media genres are being introduced, developed, and practiced at the same time.
