ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the commons in law and in practice in a British context, taking the long historical perspective. It begins with modern legal definitions, then explores what ancient common land meant in practice. The commons is understood as a fundamentally different legal regime for governing land, a concept which has been reduced down over time but still retains a radical potential.
