ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Surrealist approaches to occultism, magic, and alchemy as sources of transformational knowledge. As Grew suggests, historically established practices associated with seers, tarot, witchcraft, and alchemy have been both adopted and adapted by numerous Surrealists to suit a variety of purposes ranging from the pursuit of the marvellous to a critique of the patriarchy, all within a framework of knowledges marginalised by positivist discourse.
