ABSTRACT

When working with foreign nationals, considering the complexity and intersectionality among their cultural identities in relation to one’s own is critically important to the assessment process. This chapter discusses cultural competency with particular emphasis on cultural humility and the process of acculturation. It focuses on the intersection between culture and trauma and the importance of employing culturally sensitive assessment measures and procedures. It also explores the function of the native tongue versus the second language when discussing emotionally charged material and provides suggestions for successfully working with professional interpreters.
