ABSTRACT
Now that this book has identified and explored the various institutions on the periphery of journalism influencing practice, in this concluding chapter I will explore various ways to continue the scholarly future. I will examine how journalism studies generally, and media sociology specifically, could continue to investigate external institutions. Using the chapters in this book as a guide, this conclusion first attempts to get at a main blind spot within journalism studies research: the centrality of journalism. This provides a jumping off point for highlighting how to study these institutions that are now endemic to journalism. The conclusion then explores the need to interrogate our ideas surrounding normative theories of journalism, and the need to understand who gets to set boundaries. Finally, the chapter concludes by exploring the idea of the potential de-institutionalizing of journalism.
