ABSTRACT

This chapter tells the story of a turnaround in a difficult class. The first part of the chapter describes a room where misbehaviors led to consequences, but those consequences did not reduce the number of misbehaviors. After developing a new understanding of classroom misbehavior, the teacher focused on building a community of trust and respect and saw positive changes in students’ attitudes toward school and in their responses to peers and staff. While not a how-to chapter, it nevertheless contains many ideas about how to understand and deal with challenging students.
