ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the history of classroom management, from the beginning of common education and the use of corporal punishment, through the era of school reform, to contemporary debates about shared leadership. Changing views of classroom management, including the development of students’ social skills, creation of a learning climate, and reconceptualization of teacher authority, reflected changing views of what it means to be human, who students are, and how they learn. These larger questions are unresolved, as the field of classroom management continues to face critiques regarding power and student control.
