ABSTRACT

Three early-career teachers reflect on the importance of building relationships during school practicums. Two parts of the chapter focus on developing and maintaining positive relationships with Mentor Teachers, noting some of the common challenges that naturally arise in situations of shared authority. Ultimately, Pre-Service Teachers wish to create a safe learning environment for themselves and their students. Communicating clearly and gaining the Mentor Teachers’ respect and acceptance will give Pre-Service Teachers the authority they need to try new things during their placements. The third part of the chapter focuses on developing relationships with students. Strong and healthy student–teacher relationships are as much the basis for successful teaching and student learning during internships as they are in one’s own classroom. Given that relationships are essential to teaching and learning, teachers need to be intentional when interacting and communicating with their students.
