ABSTRACT

Teaching in a foreign setting at the start of one’s teaching career not only requires many adjustments but also can be the source of much new learning. Challenges may include approaches to curriculum, instruction, and classroom management that differ from the new teachers’ classroom ideals and from what they may have learned during their teacher education program. New learning may include instructional strategies, new understandings of classroom management, and new perspectives on the classroom teachers’ authority. Relationships with new colleagues, some with differing perspectives, allow opportunities for new teachers to build upon their collaborative skills in a professional setting. Teachers who teach abroad, even for a year, will learn much that will enrich their educational practice upon their return.
