ABSTRACT

Following the inclusion of listening (in Chapter 5) as an essential element of teacher presence, the authors of Chapter 6 offer an in-depth examination of listening. They begin by arguing its importance and then discuss its affects and ways for everyone, including teachers, to learn how to listen well. Emily Robinson, as a medical professional who listens carefully to patients’ stories of their lives, and Shae Nimmo, an actor and educator, share both personal and professional stories about the impact of being heard and how they seek to listen truly to those with whom they work. Together they offer teachers new insights into why and how to listen to students.
