ABSTRACT

The field of education research is in a moment of racial and political reckoning that demands critical scholars to account for the relationship between Black life, Black education, and anti-blackness. This reckoning is imperative because Black youth are inheritors of a massive education debt that is compounded by anti-black oppression and the continuous imposition of Black social death. Thus, critical education research that is concerned about Black youth should consider the nuances, uniqueness, and complexities of how Black life is experienced, particularly in schools. This chapter examines how critical education scholarship might center (anti-)blackness in the research process, particularly with regard to how to think about issues of time and temporality. We build on the theoretical foundations of BlackCrit and introduce what we call “Black Temporality of Thought” as an approach to critical education research. This chapter provides guidance for scholars who are interested in taking up Black Temporality of Thought in their research and concludes with implications for future research.
