ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the concept of Canadian reconciliation through the Indigenous lens. By focusing on the Truth and Reconciliation Report and other works completed by the colonial Canadian government, it highlights how much work has not been completed, and gives proof that the process of reconciliation is ultimately for Canada, and not Indigenous peoples. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau's government may be the one discussing the agenda of reconciliation; however, it began in the throes of the Harper government; the same Harper government that deliberately created racial tensions and operated as a leader of colonialism by pushing through Bill C-45. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, which has been described as the cornerstone of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, will guide this journey. The only reconciliation that exists for the reader is the reconciliation needed to forgive our families, our loved ones, for acting like the colonizer.
