ABSTRACT

Lund is a university town of 91,755 in the south of Sweden and home to Lund University, Scandinavia’s largest university with ca. 40,000 students. Lund is a smallish city with short distances to all major destinations, so bicycling is easy. One might therefore hypothesise that the share of cycling in Lund is due more to external factors, such as short distances and the large student population, than to the quality of cycling infrastructure. Lund has prioritised public transport over the bicycle as the preferred mode of sustainable transport. Public transport infrastructure focuses mainly on mobility for employees working between the rail station and major workplaces. This also includes the bike sharing system, which supports the public transport system rather than creating a sustainable and just transport system for all. Urban space has to be allocated to the most environmentally-friendly modes of transport, which are walking and cycling, to develop a truly sustainable urban transport system.
