ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the growth of shared micromobility, its impacts on users and communities, and policy considerations for managing potential adverse impacts of shared micromobility, such as increased curbspace demand. It discusses the growth and evolution of shared micromobility and summarizes user demographics and shared micromobility impacts. The chapter discusses shared micromobility policies and practices for managing devices and operations in a few contrasting urban environments. While shared micromobility has the potential to offer individual and community benefits, the growth of shared micromobility is causing some urban centers to become increasingly congested as a variety of modes compete for space to pick-up, drop-off, and use micromobility devices. Shared automated vehicles could compete with micromobility for short urban trips, particularly if per trip or per mile/kilometer costs are more competitive. Early evidence from the global pandemic suggests that micromobility may be serving longer urban trips. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the future of shared micromobility.
