ABSTRACT

The recent expansion of cycling has taken several forms, both in space and time: enlarged bike networks, off-road bicycles, and cycling at night are some of the notable developments. The design of accoutrements, including visors, helmets and gloves, has also improved. Meanwhile, winter riding has been promoted by changes in infrastructure and policy, including the design and maintenance of bike paths. Perhaps another sign of the coming of age of winter cycling in Montreal is the evolution of public discourse on the subject. Less than a decade ago, it was still not uncommon to hear and read disdainful commentary in the early winter about crazy and irresponsible yahoos out on their bikes in the snow, getting in the way of cars. With more physically separated bicycle lanes and better maintenance, Montrealers using bicycles during the winter are likely to encounter better surface conditions and find themselves riding in a less stressful environment.
