ABSTRACT

During the 1960s and 1970s, the period when China became known as the Kingdom of Bicycles, the People’s Republic became the leading bicycle riding country in the world. The emergence of electric bicycles has partly changed the way the Chinese people travel, and caused a series of chain reactions, including the internal restructuring of the bicycle industry and the reformulation of traffic laws in various cities. During Second World War, especially after the outbreak of the Pacific War, because of the extreme scarcity of strategic resources such as gasoline and electricity, public transport including cars and trams were almost paralyzed, and the advantage of bicycles moving without using fuel was revealed. In the following years, public bicycle sharing spread too many Chinese cities. By the end of 2014, the number of shared bicycles exceeded the total of any other country in the world, with a total of more than 400,000 shared bicycles.
