ABSTRACT

Some folklores of the region have a saying, “Diseases are not class character in nature, it ails everyone irrespective of villages and towns in Northeast India”. Till today, the understanding on diseases and health oscillate between the traditional knowledge and modern knowledge of health. Understanding on health, disease and illness in traditional societies incorporate belief on rituals and spirits.

However, modern health-care practices are supported with the addition of health-related infrastructure like multi-specialty hospitals, population control, family welfare programs, vaccinations and medicinal expertise. With an expansion of private hospitals and clinics in rural and urban areas of Mizoram and Manipur, this chapter reveals that traditional healing process co-exists with modern medical breakthrough and innovations in the rural and urban areas.
