ABSTRACT
Malay folk tales and their delivery are one of the special Malay heritages. Thus, it must be preserved and the meanings of the folk tales must be unravelled. This chapter focuses on the uniqueness of the language used by the Malay folk storyteller using poetry and hyperbole in order to balance and enhance the effect in telling the story. “Pantun” or the Malay poetry is the non-narrative folk literature that is often used in Malay folk tales and has its own significances. Such forms of expressions have become a medium for providing the audience advice, quips, jokes and more, seeking to bring the audience (especially the traditional society) to the imaginary world, pleasing audiences even for a brief moment to eventually forget the mundane. To bring traditional literary corpus of folk tales to the young, Malay folk tales are now entering digital animation. The chapter examines the unique attributes of such storytelling across both traditional and technological media.
