ABSTRACT

Families of atypical communicators play a key role in facilitating communication with healthcare professions. However, atypical communicators and their families frequently experience communication barriers when accessing the healthcare system. This can have an impact on the quality of the care provided and treatment outcomes. Through two case studies and research, this chapter presents an insight into how a communication disorder impacts on the life of the individual affected and their family. It explores the communication barriers within the healthcare system. Practical communication recommendations for healthcare professionals are provided and key guidance and legislation are presented. Recommendations for supporting individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds and those where English is not the first language are discussed. This chapter explores how families can act as a facilitator and barrier when communicating with healthcare professions. Recommendations for assisting families in maximising communication opportunities for the atypical communicator are presented. This chapter also highlights the evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communication with families.
