ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to revisit the discourses of signification and memorialization of events that have influenced society, culture, politics, religion, and commerce in different contexts. The book deals with the representation and signification of moments and memories from the history of World Cups while the second offers insights on events and metaphors beyond the World Cup. It also deals with Tiago J. Maranhao's attempt to understand football's role in the construction of Brazil's national identity in the context of the 1938 World Cup. The book also with significant events, processes and memories from the origins of the modern game in the nineteenth century to its becoming of markers and metaphors of diverse spheres of life through a variety of thematic and spatial representations.
