ABSTRACT

Ìjúbà or ìbà (n); júbà (v) comprises the initial acts, gestures or songs rendered to acknowledge authority figures to which a performance production owes its textual and institutional origin. The words, motions or songs presented in an ìjúbà demarcate the commencement of an iteration in which homage is paid to sources of influence and inspiration, praise is rendered to past patronages, solicitation is made of audience support and understanding, and even a wish may be expressed for the failure of rivals and competitors.
