ABSTRACT
No study of Chinese performance traditions is complete without an examination of the culture surrounding piaoyou 票友 (ticket friends). Often described under the oxymoronic heading “amateur practitioners,” piaoyou straddle the worlds of audience and performers, blurring the boundary of the gazer and the gazed, and problematizing the aesthetic experience of →xiqu 戲曲 (traditional Chinese performing arts).
