ABSTRACT

Ǧasad جسد, often transliterated as “jasad” in English and French publications, can be roughly translated to “body.” In Arabo-Islamic cultures, the body is one of the most contested topics with relevance to all fields of life—political, social, religious—and art. It is closely interwoven with questions of representation, private and public space, gender and veiling and unveiling. All these aspects become particularly relevant when this body is put onto a stage and when speaking about its performative dimensions. This text focusses on this performing body and can only touch upon the corresponding topics.
