ABSTRACT

Presented here are ten performance-related concepts essential to the understanding and appreciation of Korean performing arts today. These concepts are elucidated with a collection of articles unpacking each concept’s literal meaning, evolution, scope and current relevancy to performance, research and critical discussion. The inspiration for this list and accompanying articles was a two-day workshop on “performance-related concepts in non-European languages” at the International Research Center “Interweaving Performance Cultures” on 21–22 July 2016. The workshop brought together 13 Korean and non-Korean participants, researchers, scholars and practitioners related to performing arts. Our diverse interests, backgrounds and experiences infused multiple viewpoints, thus enlivening the discourse and positing an extensive examination and representation of all performance-related concepts for the benefit of scholars, practitioners and ultimately audiences.
