ABSTRACT
In the Korean section, Korean terms are Romanized according to the official system used in the Republic of Korea (Revised Romanization) with hangul spelling provided. Translations or descriptions follow in parentheses; if necessary or helpful, the respective hanja (Chinese characters) are also included. Direct quotes may occasionally contain Korean terms rendered in the McCune-Reischauer system, an alternative to Revised Romanization, which uses apostrophes for aspirated consonants (e.g., “p’ansori” 판소리 instead of “pansori”) and diacritics to differentiate vowels (e.g., “imyŏn” 이면 instead of “imyeon”). Hyphens are added according to Revised Romanization rules and, in addition, when helpful for better understanding. The word hangul 한글 itself, regularly written as han-geul (Revised Romanization) or han’gŭl (McCune-Reischauer), is spelled in its more common form for the sake of readability.
