ABSTRACT

The term sori 소리 has many different meanings depending on its producer and the associated context. Literally it refers to a sound or acoustic element that is found in natural environments including the sounds of wind or of birds, as well as man-made and mechanical sounds such as a human voice and the ticking of a clock. Sori can also relate to interpersonal and social communication—for example, joheun sori 좋은소리 (lit. “good sound/utterance”; positive remark) or sseun sori 쓴소리 (lit. “bitter sound/utterance”; a critical but well-meaning advice).
