ABSTRACT

The term gei 芸 (also written 藝) literally translates as “art and technique.” Gei denotes the skilled technique and expertise of a person in various performing arts, martial arts, crafts, comic performances and everyday activities. Comparable to the original Greek word for “art,” technê, gei signifies not only the “fine arts” but also the specific skills and talents. The original Chinese character 藝 includes technique and scholarship, especially in gardening.
