ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book illustrates the multidimensional nature of the subject matter and facilitates the emergence of common themes, just as the parts interact with one another. It assesses the historical context and considers the East African Community (EAC’s) legal structures. The book explores the origin of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), investigates how the EAC is regulated by the EACJ and examines its roots, jurisdiction, authority and its contributions to the EAC’s principles and values, which are also deeply embedded in the European Union (EU) project. It focuses on trade, aid and investment, investigates the economics of East African integration. The book discusses East African trade issues with the EU and with China. It focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the EAC, the challenges it faces, to then provide recommendations on how best to face these challenges.
