ABSTRACT

The Secretariat of the East African Community (EAC) is located in Arusha, in northern Tanzania, in the heart of East Africa; a modern building surrounded by lush green in a lovely town with a rural feel at an elevated level of 1,400 meters. The EU and most of its Member States maintain direct relations with the continent-wide African Union (AU) and with regional African organisations, reflecting the importance which Europe attaches to regional co-operation. The range of EAC–EU co-operation is wide in terms of the fields covered and varies as far as modes of implementation and funding are concerned. The experience gained in Europe in agriculture, health, education, scientific co-operation infrastructure, economic policy, fiscal policy, security co-operation and the experience with the many nuts and the numerous bolts of regional co-operation will continue to be made available to the EAC.
