ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to analyse the process of economic integration in the East Africa Community (EAC) in the light of the African integration process. We adopt a comparative perspective to highlight more specifically how progress towards integration clearly places the EAC at the forefront compared to all other African Regional Economic Communities (RECs). The chapter deals with the necessity to uncover the strengths, the weaknesses and the challenges facing the EAC in its strive towards consolidation. Finally, we make a number of recommendations on how to achieve a more integrated East African area.
