ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the offences which probationers were reported to have committed whilst on probation. It reports the types of offences which probationers committed, the frequency with which these were committed and the strength of the factors associated with offending. The new offence, taken in the light of some of the probationer’s other circumstances, brought home to the officer the extent to which the probationer required intensive bereavement counselling as part of his supervision. When reports of offending gained from probationers and the officers who were supervising them were compared, very high levels of agreement were noted. A series of logistic regressions were undertaken to explore some of the possible factors associated with reports of the probationers’ offending. The aim of the multivariate analyses was to produce a model which best accounted for the reported incidents of offending, but which was as uncomplicated as possible.
