ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I will provide an update on the two subsequent sweeps of interviews (in 2004 and 2010–2012), in order to – if only partially – answer the question ‘What happened next?’ The answer I provide relates to both the lives of the individuals involved in the project and the project more generally. This chapter also allows me to summarise my thinking on both a more general theory of desistance and a theory of what might be termed ‘assisted desistance’ – that is desistance supported by a formal organisation such as a probation service or drug or alcohol treatment provider. I will also take the chance to reflect on wider developments in the field of desistance and criminal careers more generally
