ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how a video tool can help language learners develop digital, language and reflective skills through active learning. Video is used extensively in language learning, both by instructors as a teaching tool and by students to produce artefacts. The digital activity discussed in this chapter moves students toward becoming video creators. Students in a first-year French language module were introduced to the tool H5P and scaffolded in using it to create their own interactive videos, first by cloning existing videos and then creating their own video from scratch and augmenting it with interactions. An evaluation revealed mixed experiences from the students. They acknowledged the activity helped develop their digital, language and reflective skills but felt the provision of instructions in English instead of French, as well as other supports, could have helped them get more familiar with H5P before commencing the activity.
