ABSTRACT

This chapter provides global and regional assessments of the progress on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 and uses empirical evidence from three countries to draw recommendations for policy makers to ensure that the world is on the way toward “building resilient infrastracture, promoting industrialization and fostering innovation. It starts with a brief historical and theoretical justification of the interlinkages between these three pillars and economic growth. The chapter explains how these interlinkages became part of the 2030 vision. Then the chapter follows utilizes available data to assess the regional progress toward SDG 9 and uses South Korea and the Democratic Republic of Congo as case studies. It also discusses the effect of the short-term and long-term impacts of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic on SDG 9. The chapter concludes and offers policy recommendations.
