ABSTRACT

A few comments are in order concerning material covered thus far. One is the question of feminine patronage and of “feminine” architecture—a very interesting phenomenon which can be identified through a separate series of features. In addition, somebody mentioned earlier the absence of monuments to abstractions. Specific themes appear in both of the cities. Both have monuments to the dead or to martyrs. The purpose of the monument is to find an affinity with the aspirations, needs, feelings, and life of a society, as in a center’s eating quarter or the large mosque in a government building. If a sufficient quality is given to these monuments, as clearly happened in Dhakka and might have happened in Baghdad, the impact of the building becomes enormous. So then there is a possibility of creating a monument out of life and not only out of death, and this is the lesson we can learn from new countries.
