ABSTRACT

Brookgreen Gardens is a museum of sculpture in South Carolina which was founded in 1931 by Archer Milton Huntington and Anna Hyatt Huntington. Archer was the son of Collis Huntington, who had built the Central Pacific Railroad and the Newport News Shipyard. Archer was his only son and sole heir. The Gardens are located about ninety miles north of Charleston, South Carolina, along the coast on Route 17, about 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach. It is the biggest museum in America: nine thousand acres, 400 of which are landscaped. On entering Brookgreen from the main highway, which bisects the property, visitors first see the piece of sculpture, which is used as a trademark, the Fighting Stallions by Anna Hyatt Huntington. Anna Hyatt Huntington laid out the initial plan of the garden and the sculpture installation. Brookgreen is certainly one of the very few big and successful sculpture gardens.
