ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses extended working life in EU28 countries and investigates if and how gender, health and life satisfaction relate to longer working lives. It presents the overall situation in Europe in 2018/19, with a focus on gendered labour market exit and life expectancy and investigates drivers and barriers to extended working life, which relate to institutional factors, norms, attitudes, personal and household characteristics as well as the status of labour markets. Taking a gender perspective and referring to the Austrian case of recently increased working lives, it also discusses why and how longer working lives might have a positive impact on old-age security and thus well-being in later life.
