ABSTRACT

Here, the writer reminisces about his relationship with Mahasweta Devi, using anecdotes to reflect upon his impressions of her and the importance of her legacy. He recalls her popularity with the common people, her political interventions to better the lot of the tribal communities, and her determination to fight injustice. He recounts how she inspired him to translate her work into Malayalam and describes her personal confidences about her broken relationships and attempted suicide. He also recalls his first encounter with her when they had travelled to Bangladesh, where they had met the ailing writer Akhtaruzzaman Elias, and Mahasweta had also revisited her family home as well as a remote tribal area. Remembering Mahasweta Devi’s lifelong struggle to change the world, he lauds her values as inspirational.
