ABSTRACT

The chapter seeks to explore the depiction of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in the mass-mediated genre of internet memes. It analyses Gandhi memeplex to explore temporal transition in his iconic photos and examine how, in the participatory culture of Web 2.0, his memes become a contested site of meanings altered and repurposed by prosumers according to their ideologies. It further investigates Gandhi’s resurrection in the virtual sphere and studies the representation of Gandhi’s fasting and non-violence (Ahimsa) in the memescape.
